A superb early 19th-century French Empire mantel clock, finely cast and gilded in ormolu, signed Schmit à Paris on the enamel dial. The classical white enamel dial is adorned with elegant Breguet-style hands and Roman numerals, encased in a beaded bezel.

The case is crowned by a seated classical figure, possibly representing Diana or a muse, delicately draped and holding a scroll or tablet, symbolising knowledge or poetry. The central relief depicts a mythological scene, possibly Cupid and Psyche, framed by lush acanthus leaves and finely detailed foliate mounts.

The white marble plinth is mounted with a richly decorated frieze of scrolling vines, birds, and lyres, supported by gilt bronze bun feet. The quality of casting, gilding, and overall composition is of the highest standard typical of Parisian Empire period clockmakers.
