AFTER THE ANTIQUE, marble - bust of Clytie, 19th century, socle base, unsigned, 64cms (h)Auctioneer's Note: Clytie was an Oceanid nymph who fell in love with the sun god Helios. However, Helios abandoned her for the mortal princess Leucothoe, daughter of King Orchamus. Heartbroken and consumed by jealousy, Clytie revealed their affair to Leucothoe’s father, who, in a cruel act of retribution, sentenced his daughter to be buried alive. Helios, disgusted, did not return to Clytie. Left alone and grieving, she spent her days gazing longingly at the sun, until she was transformed into a heliotrope flower—forever turning toward the light.Provenance: Conwy County Council, Bodlondeb Civil Offices, Conwy
