A VERY FINE REGENCY ROSEWOOD SOFA TABLE ATTRIBUTED TO GILLINGTONS OF DUBLIN - REF No. 7001
H: 29 in / 74 cm ; W: 38 in / 97 cm : D: 28 1/2 in / 72 cm
The rounded rectangular hinged top with beaded edge, above a pair of frieze drawers with opposing simulated drawers, on end supports joined by a baluster and ring turned stretcher on shell, scroll and lion paw carved feet with castors.
The brothers George and Samuel Gillington produced furniture of the highest quality and design from 1815 to 1838. They mostly traded from addresses in Abbey Street, Dublin and this inevitably led to confusion with the other well-known firm of Mack and Gibton who produced furniture of similar quality, who also traded from there. George Gillington's trade card begged it 'to be observed that his house is in the NARROW PART of Abbey Str.' (D. Fitz-Gerald, 'Dublin Directories and Trade Labels', Furniture History, 1985, p. 266).
