Biography:
Joseph Birbeck (1862-?) was born into a distinguished family of ceramic painters. An earlier member of the Birbeck family also named Joseph painted at the Coalport factory at the beginning of the 19th century. Birbeck began his career with Brown, Westhead, Moore & Co. leaving in 1900 to join Doulton where he remained until about 1926. Birbeck painted many fine sets of dessert and service plates for the North American market. His subject matter ranged from flowers, Alpine and Highland scenery to landscapes after Turner. Birbeck was noted for his studies of birds and fish and was particularly admired for his underwater aquatic effects and misty landscapes with beautiful atmospheric skies.
